Pallasite meteorite is a specific kind of meteorite characterized by the olivine peridot crystals encapsulated within its matrix. Estimated to be about 4.5 Billions years old, these space rocks date back to the beginning of our solar system. To date, there have been only 61 known pallasite meteorite falls worldwide, making pallasite meteorite a highly prized and sought after mineral.
This particular specimen comes from the Seymchan pallasite meteorite, discovered in 1967 by a geologist named F. A. Mednikov in the bed of Hekandue River in Magadan District, Russia. Although the majority of the meteorite was turned over to the USSR for scientific research, in 2004 about 110 lbs more was recovered, with this portion containing the olivine peridot crystals unique to pallasites.
